Balwyn North, also known as North Balwyn, sits 10 km east of the CBD. Its main shopping strip is where Doncaster and Bulleen roads meet, a stretch Wikipedia notes is known as “The Village”, and the 48 tram runs along Doncaster Road to its last stop at Balwyn Road. Three of the six picks below are on Doncaster Road.
This list is honest about its borders. Five picks are in Balwyn North itself. The sixth, Le Petit Café, is on Belmore Road in neighbouring Balwyn, and it is here because it is the cafe people searching this suburb keep looking for. Le Petit Café — Shop 1/385 Belmore Rd, Balwyn VIC 3103
The one people search for. Its own site says it was previously known as Palladium Cafe and is now a French-style cafe where the whole menu is gluten-free, cakes and desserts included. So there is no short list of GF options to pick through: the cafe says everything on the menu is gluten-free.
Sweet or savoury? Sweet is the buttermilk pancake at $23, with fresh fruit, berry compote and maple syrup, or French toast at $22. Savoury is the smashed avocado at $24, with two poached eggs, feta and cherry tomatoes, or a homemade scone at $11 if you only want something with your coffee. The drinks list runs to a magic, the Melbourne double ristretto topped with a little steamed milk.

A Doncaster Road all-rounder with a full menu online. Coffee is listed at $5 or $5.80. Sweet or savoury? Sweet is the ricotta blueberry hotcakes at $25. Savoury is the smashed avocado at $26.90, dressed up with stracciatella and confit cherry tomatoes, or eggs your way at $15.90 if you want to keep it simple.
The big breakfast is $29.50: two free-range eggs, bacon, a potato rosti, chorizo, mushrooms, tomato and spinach on sourdough. Note the 10% surcharge on Sundays and public holidays, printed on the menu itself.

An espresso bar and restaurant in one, out in the Greythorn end of Doncaster Road and open from 8am into the night. Its spring breakfast menu leans south: a section of Pugliese-style focaccia, from a caprese to mortadella e pistacchio, plus a pastry list of cornetto, sfogliatella and bombolone, until sold out.
Sweet or savoury? Go savoury here. Uova in purgatorio, “eggs in purgatory”, is $19: eggs baked in tomato sugo with cannellini beans and parmigiano, with toasted focaccia to mop it up. The frittata, an oven-baked omelette with seasonal vegetables, is $15. The menu notes a 10% surcharge on Sundays and 15% on public holidays. Its own site also says 100% of its profits go to local charities or to sponsoring local arts and events.

Bobbi Beans — 105 Bulleen Rd, Balwyn North VIC 3104
A coffee house first; its own site calls it Bobbi’s. It opened in July 2015 and sits just off the Eastern Freeway, pitched at people driving to work, out for a walk or riding the freeway bike path. The house coffee is the Bobbi Blend, which the cafe describes as a rich European-style blend with a hint of robusta for extra kick, and it sells its own range of single origins too. The menu and prices aren’t online, so this one is about the coffee.

This list’s Japanese pick. Matta pitches itself as “where Melbourne meets Tokyo”: specialty coffee and a Japanese-inspired brunch, on Balwyn Road rather than the Doncaster Road strip. It belongs to a small group with sister cafes in Blackburn North and Surrey Hills. Its menu is posted online as an image only, so we could not copy any dish or price from it; check it before you go.

Olive Lane describes itself as a Hellenic-inspired cafe and restaurant, open since July 2018, with pastries and desserts made daily on the premises, which is why the pastries lead here, with a full breakfast, lunch and dinner menu alongside.
