Correction (1 October 2026): an earlier version of this page was generated from map listings. It ranked fifteen places by Google star ratings and review counts we could not stand behind, called every one a verified, currently operating business, and listed at least one place that is not a brunch cafe: a restaurant whose own site lists only dinner and Sunday lunch. It has been rewritten. Every cafe below was checked against its own website, Facebook page, menu or ordering page and one independent listing on 1 October 2026, and every price was copied from the cafe’s own menu or, for Calla and Cups, from the online ordering page in its name.
Balwyn sits 10 km east of the CBD in the City of Boroondara, and Wikipedia puts its main shopping area around the corner of Whitehorse and Balwyn roads. Brunch spreads wider than that. Two picks below are on Whitehorse Road, where the 109 tram runs. One is on Belmore Road. Two sit just over the line: one in Canterbury, which borders Balwyn to the south, and one in Surrey Hills.

Manee au lait’s menu is an image PDF and Petit Peace has no priced menu of its own that we could find; both are flagged. Le Petit Café — Shop 1/385 Belmore Rd, Balwyn VIC 3103
One of the two cafes people search for by name. Its own site says it was previously known as Palladium Cafe and that “Everything on the menu is gluten-free”, cakes included, so every toast on the menu is gluten-free bread. Sweet side: the buttermilk pancake is $23, with seasonal fruit, berry compote and maple syrup, and the French toast is $22. Savoury side: smashed avocado with two poached eggs and feta is $24, the sriracha chilli scramble with crispy bacon is $22.50, and eggs your way are $14. If you’re coeliac, ask the counter how the kitchen handles cross-contact; a website can’t answer that.
Roaster: Zest Specialty Coffee, named on its site. Hours: 7am to 4pm weekdays, 8am to 3pm Saturday and Sunday. Sweet or savoury? Sweet. The cafe calls gluten-free cakes and sweets its specialty. Go for: the buttermilk pancake, $23.
Stranger Coffeehouse & Kitchen — 208 Whitehorse Rd, Balwyn VIC 3103
A Whitehorse Road cafe with a full brekkie-to-lunch menu on its site. The benny skips the English muffin: the Bacon Benny ($27) stacks house-made hashbrowns, maple-glazed streaky bacon, poached eggs, spinach and hollandaise, and there’s a vegetarian benny with beetroot, avocado and grilled halloumi at the same price. Corn fritters with black bean salsa and smashed avo are $26, and chilli eggs with house chilli jam on sourdough are $25. Sweet tooth? Pear crumble French toast, brioche soaked in crème anglaise, is $27. Coffee is $6 small or $7 large, and batch brew (filter) is $6 a cup or $9 bottomless.
Roaster: Industry Beans, named on the menu. Hours: its site says open daily 8am to 3pm; the kitchen runs 8am to 2:30pm. The Australian Good Food Guide’s listing shows it closed on Fridays and Sundays, which conflicts with the site, so ring ahead for those days. Heads-up: the menu prints a 10% weekend surcharge and 20% on public holidays. Sweet or savoury? Savoury. Both house bennys sit on hashbrowns. Go for: the bottomless batch brew, $9, next to the Bacon Benny.
Calla and Cups Cafe — 225 Canterbury Rd, Canterbury VIC 3126
The other cafe people search for by name, usually with “menu” on the end. We found no website for it, but the online ordering page in its name carries the whole menu with prices. Savoury: avocado smash with crispy bacon, poached egg and feta on sourdough is $22, corn fritters with Tasmanian smoked salmon and beetroot hummus are $27, and the brekkie burger (bacon, fried egg, hash brown, chilli jam) is $18. Sweet: the matcha pancake, with strawberry jam, berries, peanuts and cream, is $15. For small people, the Little Calla Brekkie (scrambled egg and bacon on toast) is $12. The drinks list leans Asian too: a flat white is $5, a black sesame latte $5.80, and there’s a kaya latte, named for the coconut-and-egg jam of Malaysia and Singapore.

The answer to “Japanese brunch in Balwyn”. Its own Facebook page sums it up as “Coffee, Food and sweets”, and the Australian Good Food Guide lists it as best known for Japanese teishoku. Teishoku is a Japanese set meal: one main with rice, miso soup and small sides on a single tray, which makes it a proper feed rather than a snack. A shokudo is a casual everyday eatery. Mamma Knows East, writing in October 2025, described brunch classics with an Asian twist alongside Japanese lunch sets. We found no priced menu of its own online, and we don’t quote delivery-app prices, so there are no prices here.

Manee au lait — 215 Mont Albert Rd, Surrey Hills VIC 3127
A Surrey Hills corner cafe that its own site describes as offering “artisanal coffee, all-day brunch, and a touch of French charm”. Au lait is French for “with milk”, as in café au lait. It belongs to the same group as the two Matta cafes, according to its site, and its booking button leads to a contact form with a phone number and email. The menu is a two-page PDF of images, which our text checks can’t read, so apart from the roaster line, which we read by eye, no dishes or prices are repeated here; open it on the cafe’s site before you go, where every dish is priced.
Roaster: Industry Beans, printed on the menu PDF. Hours: 7:30am to 3pm Monday to Friday, 8am to 3pm Saturday. The site lists no Sunday hours. Sweet or savoury? Not called; we don’t quote dishes from an image-only menu. Go for: a weekday brunch, since that’s when its listed hours are longest.

Opening hours come from each cafe’s own site where it lists them, otherwise from the Australian Good Food Guide, and say so. Balwyn’s location and transport are from Wikipedia.
