Camberwell’s restaurant scene has outgrown the old reputation of being a food desert east of Hawthorn. Burke Road now holds enough quality options that you can eat well without leaving the suburb, and the multicultural spread has deepened significantly over the past five years.
The restaurants worth knowing
Elyros – 871 Burke Road
Greek-Mediterranean, but not the kind where you are served a $14 souvlaki on a plastic plate. Elyros does refined Greek cooking – the lamb shoulder for two ($68) is slow-cooked and genuinely excellent. The dips plate ($22) is a proper starter, not an afterthought. The wine list leans Greek and Australian, which is a combination that works better than it sounds. The room fills on Friday and Saturday nights. Book ahead.
Best for: Friday night dinner, special occasions. Price: Dinner for two with wine: $120-$160.
Chengdu Taste – 766 Burke Road
The Sichuan restaurant that put Camberwell on the map for people who otherwise would never eat east of Richmond. The mapo tofu ($18) has proper ma la heat. The dan dan noodles ($16) are the benchmark order. The boiled fish in chilli oil ($28) is confrontational in the best way. The room is basic, the service is functional, and the food is the entire point.
Best for: Weeknight dinner, groups who can handle heat. Price: Dinner for two: $50-$70.
Georges Restaurant and Bar – 562 Burke Road
The occasion restaurant. Georges does modern Australian with European technique and a wine list that takes itself seriously. The fit-out is more polished than most Burke Road spots, and the service matches. Main courses run $38-$48, and the degustation ($95) is worth it if you want the kitchen’s full attention.
Best for: Birthdays, anniversaries, impressing parents. Price: Dinner for two with wine: $160-$220.
Quick bites
Tao Dumplings at 550 Burke Road handles the dumpling craving efficiently – xiao long bao ($14 for 6), pork and chive dumplings ($12), and a short menu that does not try to be everything. Banh Mi Boys at the same address does Vietnamese rolls for under $12 that are worth the walk.
Weeknight vs weekend
Weeknights are the sweet spot for eating on Burke Road. Walk-in friendly, quieter, and the kitchens have bandwidth. Friday and Saturday nights fill the good restaurants by 7pm – book ahead or eat early (6pm) to avoid disappointment.
