Camberwell is one of the best-connected suburbs in Melbourne’s east, and the train station at the junction is the main reason. Here is what that actually means for your daily commute.
Transport Scorecard
| Mode | Available | Quality | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train | Yes | Strong | Camberwell station – Lilydale, Belgrave, Alamein lines |
| Tram | Yes | Frequent | Route 75 (Camberwell Rd), Route 70 (Riversdale Rd) |
| Bus | Yes | Average | Fills gaps to suburbs not on rail |
| Cycling | Yes | Good | Anniversary Trail, Gardiners Creek trail nearby |
| Driving | Yes | Tight parking | Permit zones around Burke Rd, competitive near junction |
Getting to the CBD
Camberwell station to Flinders Street: 18-22 minutes by train during peak, with services every 8-12 minutes on the Lilydale and Belgrave lines. The Alamein line runs less frequently but gets you to the same place. This is fast by eastern suburbs standards.
Tram 75 along Camberwell Road to the CBD takes 30-40 minutes depending on traffic. Tram 70 along Riversdale Road is a similar timeframe. Both run every 8-12 minutes during peak.
Cycling
The Anniversary Trail starts near Camberwell and runs east through Canterbury and Surrey Hills to Alamein. It is a sealed, off-road path that works for commuting and recreation. Gardiners Creek trail is accessible from the southern edge of the suburb and connects through to the Main Yarra Trail. If you are comfortable on a bike, the CBD is about 35-40 minutes along the creek trails.
Driving and Parking
Burke Road parking during shopping hours is competitive. Timed spots disappear fast on Saturdays. Residential streets near the junction require permits. If you are renting, check whether your building has a car space – they are not guaranteed in the older apartment blocks near the station.
The Eastern Freeway is accessible via the Chandler Highway or Hoddle Street, but neither connection is fast from Camberwell. The Monash Freeway via Toorak Road is more direct for southbound travel.
The Verdict
Camberwell earns its transport reputation. Three train lines, two tram routes, and genuinely walkable shopping strips mean most residents can handle daily life without a car. The station at the junction is the suburb’s strongest infrastructure asset.
