Things to Do in Docklands Melbourne

What Is There to Do in Docklands?

Docklands’ activities centre on three things: the waterfront, Marvel Stadium, and The District Docklands. It’s not a pub-crawl suburb or a gallery-hopping destination — it’s a precinct where the harbour itself is the main attraction, and the events calendar at Marvel Stadium provides the energy spikes.

The Main Attractions

Marvel Stadium — AFL matches, cricket, concerts, exhibitions, and whatever else fills a 53,000-seat stadium. The matchday atmosphere transforms the entire precinct. Check the fixture before you plan — or plan around it if you want a quiet weekend.

The Waterfront Promenades — Walking, running, or cycling the harbour loop. The full circuit from NewQuay to Yarra’s Edge via Victoria Harbour takes about 45 minutes and passes public art, the marina, and views of the Bolte Bridge. Free, flat, and open.

The District Docklands — Shopping, cinema, dining, and Costco. Not a charming village market, but a functional retail centre that means residents don’t need to leave the precinct for most needs.

Harbour Activities — Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and boat cruises operate from the marina at NewQuay. Getting on the water is one of the few things Docklands offers that most Melbourne suburbs can’t.

Weekend Activities

Saturday morning: Waterfront run or walk, then coffee at Hardware Societe at The District. The harbour is at its best in morning light before the wind picks up.

Saturday afternoon: The District for shopping or a film at the cinema. Costco run if you’re in the mood. Browse the waterfront art installations.

Saturday night: Dinner at Cargo Hall or Berth with harbour views. Pre-game drinks at the Woolshed if Marvel Stadium has an event. Walk into the CBD for deeper options.

Sunday: Ron Barassi Snr Park for sport or a kick. The library for reading with harbour views. Brunch at NewQuay. The lazy Docklands Sunday is genuinely pleasant when the wind cooperates.

Free Things

  1. Walk the full waterfront promenade loop (45 minutes, public art, harbour views)
  2. Visit the Docklands Library — modern, well-designed, free
  3. Webb Bridge — Koorie-inspired design, great photos
  4. Ron Barassi Snr Park for open space and sport
  5. Sunset from Yarra’s Edge looking west toward the Bolte Bridge
