Correction (1 October 2026): an earlier version of this page listed eleven “Indian” venues in Footscray that we could not find at any source, gave them seat counts, price ranges and “insider tips”, and printed them under postcode 3016, which belongs to Williamstown, not Footscray (3011). It has been rewritten from scratch. Every place below with its own heading was checked against its own current website and a second, independent listing on 1 October 2026.
Food in Footscray tends to follow the people who live here, and the Census can say roughly who they are. Community context: at the 2021 Census, 800 of Footscray’s 17,131 residents, 4.7 per cent, were born in India, the most common overseas birthplace after Vietnam (8.5 per cent), and Nepali, at 1.5 per cent, was among the five languages other than English most used at home. The Indian kitchens we could check inside the suburb sit on Irving Street and Barkly Street, so this guide starts there and then steps over the suburb line to Yarraville and Flemington.
Two kitchens below are inside Footscray, and the other two are close by. Three publish their prices as text you can read before you order, and the fourth, Pandu’s, publishes its menu as photographed pages, so it appears here without prices. Every price below was copied from the venue’s own website on 1 October 2026; menus move, so give them a squiz before you head out.

Madhumoti Restaurant — 95 Irving St, Footscray VIC 3011
Madhumoti describes its food as Bangladeshi and Indian, and its menu keeps both in view. The Bangladeshi side starts with the bhortas, hand-mashed sides sharpened with chilli and often mustard oil: aloo bhorta (potato) and eggplant bhorta are $9.50 each, and shutki bhorta, made with dried fish, is $14.50. Kacchi biryani is $18.50, rice cooked with goat and spices and served with egg and potatoes, and the chicken biriyani ($18.50) is made with kalizara, a small-grained fragrant rice.
On the menu: halim ($12.00), a thick mixed-lentil dish, and mughlai paratha ($12.00), a crisp flatbread stuffed with egg and spices. The Indian side is familiar ground, with butter chicken at $20.50, palak paneer and aloo gobi at $18.50 each, garlic naan at $4.50, vegetable samosas at $7.50 for two, and borhani, a tangy yoghurt drink, at $4.00. The restaurant’s own site says it offers dine-in, takeaway, online ordering and party catering.

Pandu’s — 351 Barkly St, Footscray VIC 3011
Pandu’s calls itself an Indo-Chinese restaurant and pairs that with South Indian cooking; its own site’s title runs through fried rice, noodles, dosa and biryani. Indo-Chinese food grew up in India’s Chinese communities, Kolkata’s above all, and works soy, garlic and chilli through Indian spicing. The Australian Good Food Guide names its Szechwan fried rice as the dish Pandu’s is best known for.
The restaurant’s own site says it is BYO, offers dine-in and takeaway, and cooks and serves some dishes in clay pots, and makes its biryanis fresh to its own recipe. A dosa, for anyone reading the board for the first time, is a thin crepe of fermented rice and lentil batter, cooked until crisp and served with sambar and chutneys. Pandu’s publishes its menu as photographed pages rather than text, so we have not quoted its prices; AGFG’s listing also ticks catering, so ask when you ring.
Start with: Szechwan fried rice, the dish AGFG lists as its best known.
Mishra’s Kitchen — 18 Wembley Ave, Yarraville VIC 3013
Over the line in Yarraville, the Wembley Avenue shop is the one Mishra’s own site calls “The Original Mishra’s Kitchen” (a second is on Vernon Street in South Kingsville). Its menu is built around the tandoor: tandoori murgh, chicken marinated overnight in yoghurt and spices, is $15.00 for a half and $25.00 for a full. Butter chicken is $19.90, as is lamb madras, a South Indian curry with mustard seeds, green chilli and coconut milk.
On the menu: dal Mishrani ($17.50), black lentils slow-cooked Punjabi style with ginger. The chicken biryani is $14.50, garlic naan $4.50 and a mango lassi $4.50, and most of the tandoor and curry list is marked gluten free.
Start with: butter chicken, $19.90.
Marhaba Biryani — 332 Racecourse Rd, Flemington VIC 3031
East of the river in Flemington, Marhaba Biryani says its focus is Hyderabadi-style biryani, and its own site lists the Hyderabadi chicken, lamb and goat dum biryanis at $16.00 each, shown as reduced prices. Dum is the sealed-pot method: marinated meat and part-cooked basmati are layered, the lid is closed and the pot steams slowly, so the rice takes on the spice. For a table, the chicken mix platter family pack is $65.00.
On the menu: chicken 65 (dry), a fried, chilli-red chicken starter from South India, at $15.00, with butter chicken at $17.00 and samosas at $5.00 for two.

Also in Footscray, without a menu we could read
Hyderabadi Bahar Indian Restaurant, 32 Irving Street, takes orders through DoorDash, but the ordering website its Everything Indian listing gives did not resolve on 1 October 2026, so we have no prices from the venue itself. AGFG lists the same address as 4 Seasons Biryani Indian Restaurant.

Is there a Biryani House or Biryani King in Footscray?
AGFG lists Biryani House Footscray at 61 Gordon Street, but Biryani House’s own website gives only its West Melbourne restaurant at 339 King Street. AGFG and Everything Indian list Biryani King at 359 Barkly Street, but the website its Everything Indian listing gives did not resolve on 1 October 2026. We could not check a current menu for either, so ring before you go.
Where can I get a dosa near Footscray?
Pandu’s, 351 Barkly St, pairs Indo-Chinese food with South Indian cooking and names dosa on its own site. Chai N Dosa is at 310 Ballarat Road, Braybrook, and its site lists fresh dosas, idlis and chai; its prices load only inside its ordering system, so they are not quoted here.

How we checked
On 1 October 2026 we read each venue’s own website and copied every item and price exactly as printed. Madhumoti’s prices come from the menu on its homepage, Mishra’s Kitchen’s from its restaurant menu page, and Marhaba Biryani’s from its own online shop, where the prices shown are marked as reduced. We confirmed each address at a second, independent source: the Australian Good Food Guide or DoorDash’s store listing. Pandu’s menu is published as photographed pages, so we have not quoted its prices. The Census figures are from the ABS 2021 QuickStats for Footscray. Online prices can differ from counter prices, and deals come and go. The photos are illustrative, from Unsplash: they show the kind of dish, not the venue’s own food.
