Correction (1 October 2026): an earlier version of this page listed twelve “Indian food” places in Hughesdale, with names, seat counts, prices and “insider tips” that we cannot match to any real business, under a postcode (3164) that is not Hughesdale’s. It has been rewritten from scratch. Every venue below was confirmed at two independent sources, and every price was copied from the venue’s own menu or ordering page on 1 October 2026.
Hughesdale is a small suburb, and its Indian food reflects that: of the Indian kitchens we could find inside its borders, one publishes a full menu we could read, and the other menus we could read are over the line in Murrumbeena, with a chain outlet at Chadstone. That is how this page is built, honestly “in and around”: the Hughesdale kitchen first, then three neighbours, with prices wherever we could read them from the venue’s own menu or ordering page.
Community context: at the 2021 Census, India was the most common country of birth in Hughesdale after Australia, at 5.8 per cent of residents (440 people), just ahead of Greece at 5.3 per cent. Greek is still the language most used at home after English, at 11.8 per cent, with Hindi at 2.0 per cent. The suburb runs along the railway between Oakleigh and Murrumbeena, bounded by Poath Road to the west and Warrigal Road to the east.
The precinct: the suburb’s shops grew up around Hughesdale station on Poath Road after it opened in 1925, and a local traders’ association later rebranded the strip “Poath Road Village”. The menus below, though, are on its edges: Warrigal Road on the east, Neerim Road in Murrumbeena to the west, and Chadstone to the north-east.

Cha Adda — 73 Warrigal Rd, Hughesdale VIC 3166
The Hughesdale kitchen with a full menu online, and its own About page calls it a Bangladeshi and Indian restaurant. It sits on Warrigal Road, the suburb’s eastern edge, and the same page places it in Oakleigh, the suburb across the road. The name is a fair guide: cha is tea, $3 here, and an adda is a long, unhurried chat. The house special is kacchi biryani (lamb) at $22, the Dhaka-style biryani where raw marinated meat and rice cook through together in one sealed pot.
On the menu: fuchka ($10), the Bengali name for pani puri, crisp hollow shells you fill and eat in one bite; chotpoti ($10), a tangy street snack of yellow peas and potato under tamarind; and hilsha ($20), the fish Bengal is famous for, offered in a mustard (sharisha) or onion (do’peyaja) sauce. If you want something familiar, butter chicken is $22.

Tara’s Indian Restaurant — 454 Neerim Rd, Murrumbeena VIC 3163
In Murrumbeena, the next suburb west, opposite Murrumbeena station by its own description. Its website says it has been trading for 18 years, and it takes pickup and delivery orders through its own ordering page. The menu is the North Indian curry-house canon. Butter chicken, marked “sweet” on the menu, is $18; lamb rogan josh, the Kashmiri lamb curry coloured with dried chilli, is also $18; garlic naan is $3.50; and a lamb, chicken or beef biryani is $14.
On the menu: the lunch time special, $12 from 11am to 2pm, is a curry of your choice with saffron rice. For a household, the family pack ($55) covers two to three people: samosa or pakora, lamb rogan josh, butter chicken, saffron rice, raita, two naan and papadams.

Vanta Raamudu — 480 Neerim Rd, Murrumbeena VIC 3163
Further along Neerim Road from Tara’s, and a different India altogether. The store description on its own ordering site says it was established in 2020, was formerly known as Streets of Hyderabad, and cooks “Homestyle & Fusion food that speaks in Telugu”, the language of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. That shows in the menu: Hyderabadi chicken dum biryani is $17.90, the rice and bone-in chicken layered and slow-cooked in a sealed pot; gongura chicken curry is $14.90, made with the sour leaves (rosella, as the menu calls them) that are an Andhra signature.
On the menu: masala dosa ($15), a rice-and-lentil crepe filled with onion and potato masala, with chutneys and sambar; and Hyderabadi Irani chai ($3.90), the slow-brewed spiced tea of Hyderabad’s old Irani cafes.

Chilli India Chadstone — Shop B348/1341 Dandenong Rd, Chadstone VIC 3148
The Chadstone branch of a Melbourne chain with outlets from Melbourne Central to Melton and one in Sydney, whose own site calls it the “Finest Biryani Makers in town”. The only Chadstone prices we found are on an Uber-run ordering page that the chain’s site links, so we have not printed any for this one: check the counter or that ordering page before you order.
On the menu: that ordering page lists a Hyderabadi chicken dum biryani, chole bhature (spiced chickpeas with puffed fried bread), a one-curry-with-rice-or-noodles plate, and vada pav, Mumbai’s street-food answer to a burger: a spiced potato fritter in a soft buttered bun.

The website its Good Food Guide listing links to, rotihut.com.au, did not load when we checked on 1 October 2026, so we could not confirm what it currently serves or charges, and it is not in our picks. What is kacchi biryani?
Kacchi means raw: the marinated meat goes into the pot uncooked, layered with partly cooked rice, and the two finish together in a sealed pot. It is the celebration biryani of Dhaka and Bangladesh, usually made with mutton or goat. Cha Adda in Hughesdale lists a lamb kacchi biryani at $22 as a house special.

On 1 October 2026 we read each venue’s own website or online ordering page and copied every item and price exactly as printed. Cha Adda’s prices come from the menu on its own site; Tara’s from the Restaurant On Go ordering page its website links for pickup and delivery; and Vanta Raamudu’s from its own Square ordering site. Chilli India Chadstone’s only online prices sit on an Uber-run ordering page, so we have not printed them. We confirmed each address at a second, independent source: the Australian Good Food Guide, India.com.au or Singh.com.au. Census figures are from the ABS 2021 QuickStats for Hughesdale; the suburb’s boundaries and history are from Wikipedia. Online prices can differ from counter prices, and menus change.
