A good dessert list is a list of builds, not adjectives. Everything below is copied from a menu or a price page: what the item is called, what the menu says is in it, what it costs, and when the door is open. Where a menu doesn’t spell out the build, we say so rather than guess. The mess forecast is inferred from the format, not from eating anything. Six stops: one gelato shop, one patisserie and four kitchens that sell a sweet at the end of a meal. Three are in Kew, one is in Kew East and two are just over the border in Hawthorn.
Two price caveats up front. Piccolina’s prices come from the brand’s home page and Laurent’s from its chain-wide online menu, so neither is a Kew-only list.

Piccolina Gelateria — 731 Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn VIC 3122
The build: the brand’s home page lists a Tartufo at $16, an Il Gelato Sandwich at $20 and a Tiramisù at $45. It doesn’t spell out what is in each, so we won’t. A tartufo (Italian for truffle) is a round ball of gelato, usually with a different centre. We captured no scoop prices.
Mess forecast: medium, inferred from the format: it’s gelato, and gelato melts.
Hours: Piccolina’s own site lists “Every day 12:00PM - LATE”. OpenStreetMap lists Monday to Saturday 12:00 to 23:00 and Sunday 12:00 to 22:00.
Order: the Tartufo, $16, the cheapest of the three desserts we captured.
Laurent Bakery — 251 High Street, Kew VIC 3101
The build: Laurent’s online full menu lists a pain au chocolat at $7.30, a berry danish at $7.40, a macaron at $3.10, a chocolate eclair at $8.60 and a mille feuille from $12.40. An eclair (a finger of choux pastry, the light hollow pastry also used for profiteroles) is filled and iced; mille feuille is French for a thousand leaves, which means layers of puff pastry with cream between them. The menu prices are chain-wide, not Kew-specific.
Mess forecast: high for the mille feuille, medium for the eclair, both inferred from the layers and the cream.
Hours (Kew): Monday to Friday 7:00am to 4:30pm, Saturday and Sunday 8:00am to 4:30pm.
Order: the chocolate eclair, $8.60.
Araliya — 1/118 High Street, Kew VIC 3101
The build: the menu lists a Vatalappam as “Steamed coconut custard, cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon”, tagged (vg) and (gf), at $18. Vatalappam is a Sri Lankan coconut custard dessert. Araliya is listed as a Sri Lankan restaurant.
Mess forecast: low, inferred from a steamed custard that sets.
Hours: Tuesday to Thursday 5pm to 10pm, Friday 12pm to 10:30pm, Saturday 4:30pm to 10:30pm, Sunday 12pm to 9:30pm.
Order: the Vatalappam, $18.
Vicky’s Italian Restaurant & Pizza — 5/7 Strathalbyn Street, Kew East VIC 3102
The build: Sticky Date Pudding, $12.50 on the menu, which gives no ingredients. As a rule it is a date sponge under toffee sauce. The restaurant says its “family-owned restaurant has been serving the local community with traditional Italian recipes since 1986”.
Mess forecast: low, inferred from a pudding served on a plate.
Hours: Tuesday to Thursday 6pm to 9pm, Friday and Saturday 6pm to 9:30pm, Sunday 6pm to 9pm, closed Monday. Takeaway orders from 5pm.
Order: the Sticky Date Pudding, $12.50, after a pasta or pizza.
Plaka Gyros — Shop 5 & 6, 673 Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn VIC 3122
The build: Baklava, $9.80 on the venue’s own order.online storefront, with no description on the page. Baklava is layers of filo pastry with chopped nuts, soaked in syrup or honey. The traders’ directory spells the name Playka Gyros.
Mess forecast: medium, inferred from the syrup.
Hours: closed Monday; Tuesday to Thursday 11:30am to 9:00pm, Friday and Saturday 11:30am to 9:30pm, Sunday 11:30am to 9:00pm.
Order: the Baklava, $9.80, the cheapest restaurant dessert we captured.
Skinny Dog Hotel — 155 High Street, Kew VIC 3101
The build: the Spring 2026 food menu lists a Vegan Choc Mud Cake at $19 with no description. Mud cake is a dense chocolate cake. The pub’s trading hours are Sunday to Wednesday 12:00pm to 10:00pm, Thursday 12:00pm to 11:00pm, and Friday and Saturday 12:00pm to 1:00am; the kitchen’s hours are not in what we captured, so don’t assume a dessert at 1am.
Mess forecast: low, inferred from a cake served as a slice.
Order: the Vegan Choc Mud Cake, $19.
The photo shows a cheesecake slice with a chocolate drizzle. It is not the pub’s mud cake.

How we checked
On 2 October 2026 we read each venue’s own menu or price page and copied item names and prices as printed. We confirmed each address at a second source: OpenStreetMap, the Kew Junction directory or the Glenferrie Road traders’ directory. Piccolina’s own site prints the digit 1 as the letter I in its address, so we rely on OpenStreetMap and the directory for 731. The Skinny Dog Hotel menu is a PDF that prints bare numbers, so we have added the dollar sign. Plaka Gyros prices come from its order.online storefront; delivery-app prices, which can be marked up, were not used. Vicky’s is in Kew East (postcode 3102) and Piccolina and Plaka Gyros are in Hawthorn (3122), which is why their headings say so. Hours and prices change, so check before you go.
