Every pizza menu makes a claim, even when it says nothing: the style is in the description, the oven is in the boast, and the price is in the corner. This page sticks to what five menus say. Three of them call their pizzas wood-fired (Chicci, Dawson and the Auburn Hotel) and two are pub or bar pizza (the Postmaster Hotel and Nevermind Bar). Chicci, Dawson and the Postmaster are in Kew; the Auburn Hotel (which writes its own suburb as Hawthorn East) and Nevermind are over the border in Hawthorn.
A quick primer so the menus read easier. Neapolitan pizza is the soft, thin-based, blistered-crust pie cooked fast in a very hot wood oven; Roman pizza is thinner and crisper; New York pizza is the big foldable slice; and pub pizza is the one on the bar-dining menu next to the parma and the burger. None of the pages we read for these five places uses the word Neapolitan, so we have not put a style label on anyone. We quote what each venue says about its oven and dough, and say so where it says nothing.

Chicci — 321 High Street, Kew VIC 3101
The style: wood-fired restaurant pizza. Menu tells: the site says it cooks in “our very own wood-fired oven” and promises “a crispy crust with a hint of smoky goodness”, and the menu files its pizzas under “Wood Fired Pizza”. The classic: the Margherita, “Pomodoro base with FDL cheese and basil”, starts at $20.00 (the menu spells out “Fior di Latte” elsewhere, which is fresh mozzarella); the Garlic Herb pizza, a bianca base with garlic and oregano, starts at $17.00. The menu warns that prices “may vary based on add-ons, extras, and sizes”, so treat both as starting prices. Hours are Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday 12 pm - 2 pm and 5 pm - 9 pm, Friday 12 pm - 2 pm and 5 pm - 9:30 pm, Saturday 12 pm - 9:30 pm, and closed Mondays.
BYO / takeaway: BYO not stated; the menu offers pickup, delivery and dine-in. Verdict for: a sit-down dinner, since the site lists a “Romantic Dinner Menu”.
Dawson Neighbourhood Italian — 241 High Street, Kew VIC 3101
The style: wood-fired restaurant pizza. Menu tells: the site says its pizzas are “Cooked in a woodfired oven”, with “hand-stretched dough” and “a crisp, blistered crust and light, airy centre”. The classic: the Margherita is $23 (tomato, fior di latte, basil). For heat, the Diavola is $29, with salami, spicy nduja (a soft, chilli-laced salami), olives and buffalo mozzarella. Hours are Monday to Sunday 11.30am - 10pm.
BYO / takeaway: “Please note we do not allow B.Y.O.”; the site has an “Order Takeaway” link. Verdict for: a family dinner or a date night, both of which the site lists among its occasions.
The Auburn Hotel — 85 Auburn Road, Hawthorn VIC 3122
The hotel’s own site and Broadsheet give the suburb as Hawthorn East; we print Hawthorn with the 3122 postcode the hotel uses, because 3122 is the postcode Australia Post lists under Hawthorn. The style: pub pizza with a woodfired section. Menu tells: the Spring 2026 menu PDF carries a “WOODFIRED PIZZA” heading over eight pizzas, and nothing about dough or flour. The classic: the Margherita, with basil, is $29; the Pepperoni, with chilli, sugo and mozzarella, is $31. The site describes its beer garden as “an inviting open-air space with kids’ playground”. Hours are Monday to Wednesday 12:00pm - 10:00pm, Thursday 12:00pm - 11:00pm, Friday 12:00pm - 12:00am, Saturday 11:00am - 12:00am and Sunday 11:00am - 11:00pm.
BYO / takeaway: not stated in what we read. Verdict for: a family table, since the garden has a playground.
Postmaster Hotel — 186 High Street, Kew VIC 3101
The style: pub pizza, in the historic Kew Post Office building (“est. 1888”, says the site). Menu tells: no claims about dough or oven on the menu or page we read. The classic: the Margherita, with tomato sugo, fior di latte and basil, is $23 on the menu. The cheaper way in is the happy hour the site lists from Thursday to Sunday, 4pm to 6pm, which includes a $15 Margherita Pizza.
BYO / takeaway: BYO not stated; the site has an “Order Takeaway” button. Verdict for: a post-work pizza inside the happy-hour window.
Nevermind Bar — 336 Burwood Road, Hawthorn VIC 3122
The style: small, cheap bar pizza. Menu tells: the menu PDF is headed “9” PIZZAS ALL $9” and lists nine, among them the Queen Margherita (Napoli, fior di latte), the Primo Calabrese (hot salami, napoli, mozzarella, chilli) and the Aloha Maui (caramelized pineapple, ham). “Napoli” on a Melbourne menu means tomato sauce, and every pizza comes with a chipotle aioli crust dipping sauce, which the menu calls vegan. The price catch: the PDF’s happy-hours table says “$9 PIZZA ALL DAY ERRY DAY”, while the What’s On panel on the home page lists “$9 Pizzas” on Monday. The two don’t line up, so ring (03) 9819 0078 before you plan a cheap night around it.
BYO / takeaway: not stated; the menu says “PLEASE ORDER AT BAR”. Verdict for: a cheap pizza on a night when the bar lists live music, DJs or trivia.

Chicci lists a Margherita from $20.00 (a starting price), Dawson $23, and the Postmaster Hotel $23, with a $15 happy-hour margherita from Thursday to Sunday, 4pm to 6pm. Over the border, the Auburn Hotel charges $29 and Nevermind Bar’s Queen Margherita is one of its 9-inch pizzas at $9. Sizes are not stated on every menu, so compare with care.
Which Kew pizza places allow BYO?
Dawson says it does not: “Please note we do not allow B.Y.O.” None of the other four pages we read states a BYO policy, so check with the venue before you carry a bottle in.
Where can I get takeaway pizza in Kew?
Chicci’s menu offers pickup and delivery, Dawson’s site has an “Order Takeaway” link and the Postmaster Hotel’s site has an “Order Takeaway” button. The prices on this page are the venues’ own menu prices, not delivery-app prices.
Is there a cheap pizza night near Kew?
Nevermind Bar’s menu prices its nine 9-inch pizzas at $9, though its home page lists the $9 pizzas on Mondays while its menu says “ALL DAY ERRY DAY”, so confirm the night. In Kew itself, the Postmaster Hotel’s $15 Margherita Pizza is part of a Thursday-to-Sunday happy hour, 4pm to 6pm.
How we checked
On 2 October 2026 we read each venue’s own website, ordering page or menu PDF and copied every price as printed. Where a menu prints a bare number (Dawson’s “Margherita 23”, the Auburn Hotel’s “MARGHERITA PIZZA 29”, the Postmaster Hotel’s “MARGHERITA 23”) we show it in dollars. Chicci prints “Starts at” prices, so its figures are starting prices. We confirmed each address at a second source: OpenStreetMap, the Kew Junction Business Association directory or Broadsheet. Hours are the venues’ own wording; we have left out the Postmaster Hotel’s hours because the only ones we found were on OpenStreetMap, not the venue’s site. The Postmaster’s menu PDF is named for May 2026 and the Auburn Hotel’s for Spring 2026, so specials and prices can have moved since.
