Correction (2 October 2026): an earlier version of this page listed places and details we could not stand behind. It has been rewritten, and every place below was checked against its own current information.

A menu marker is a promise the venue makes, so this guide reports the markers exactly as printed and the statements exactly as published, and nothing beyond them. We could verify five places near Kew whose own pages or menus mention vegan options: two in Kew and Kew East, and three in Hawthorn, the next suburb over. Every one is a pub, bar or cafe with a wider menu. None of the five calls itself fully plant-based on the pages we read, so “vegan options” is the honest label for all of them.

For each place: what is marked, whether the venue publishes a kitchen statement, the one dish to order if the menu names one, and a question to ask before you order. Where a venue gave us no dish and no price, we print none.

Skinny Dog Hotel — 155 High Street, Kew VIC 3101

Fully plant-based or options: options. The pub’s FAQ says: “Our menu has a range of options that can accommodate for vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options.”

Menu markers: the word “vegan” in the dish name. The Spring Food 2026 menu PDF lists VEGAN CHOC MUD CAKE at $19, the one dish we could find named as vegan. Mud cake is a dense, rich chocolate cake, so this is a dessert. For a main, the same PDF marks SPICY CAULIFLOWER STEAK SALAD at $29 with VG, which its legend defines as Vegan. The pub lists trading hours of 12pm to 10pm Sunday to Wednesday, 12pm to 11pm Thursday and 12pm to 1am Friday and Saturday.

Kitchen statement: none on the pages we read.

The marked order: the vegan choc mud cake, $19.

Ask: which mains can be made vegan, and whether the fryer is shared.

Kuche — 682 High Street, Kew East VIC 3102

Fully plant-based or options: options. The cafe’s own page says: “We cater to many dietary requirements: gluten free, vegan & vegetarian, dairy free, nut free and low FODMAP.” That is the venue’s list of requirements it says it caters to, not a promise about any one dish.

Menu markers: none to report. The cafe menu is published as images, so we could not copy a dish, a marker or a price as text. It is open Monday to Friday 7am to 4pm and Saturday 8am to 3pm, and closed on public holidays.

Kitchen statement: none on the pages we read.

The marked order: none we can name. Read the cafe menu on the site first.

Ask: which items on the day’s cabinet and menu are vegan, and how the vegan and gluten free items are kept apart.

The Auburn Hotel — 85 Auburn Road, Hawthorn VIC 3122

Fully plant-based or options: options. The pub’s FAQ says: “Our menu has a range of options that can accommodate for vegetarian, vegan and gluten free diets.”

Menu markers: “plant based” in the dish name, plus VG, which the menu’s legend defines as Vegan. The Spring Food 2026 menu PDF lists PLANT BASED BURGER at $31 marked (LG, LD, V, VG), and a PLANT BASED PARMA at $33 with the same VG mark. A plant-based burger usually means a patty built from legumes, grains or soy protein; the menu extract does not say which this one is.

Kitchen statement: none on the pages we read.

The marked order: the plant based burger, $31.

Ask: what the patty is made from, and whether it is cooked on its own grill.

The Beehive Hotel — 84 Barkers Road, Hawthorn VIC 3122

Fully plant-based or options: options. The pub’s page says: “Our menu includes vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.”

Menu markers: none to report. We did not capture a menu with markers, so we have no dish and no price to give. Its site advertises midweek specials including a parma, steak and smash burgers, so ask whether any has a vegan version. Its own page gives two sets of trading hours, so confirm before you go.

Kitchen statement: none on the pages we read.

The marked order: none we can name.

Ask: which dishes on today’s menu are vegan, and whether the specials can be made without meat.

Nevermind Bar — 336 Burwood Road, Hawthorn VIC 3122

Fully plant-based or options: options, and thinly evidenced. The bar’s food menu PDF lists QUINNIE’S GOLDEN SPRING ROLLS (7) with the price line “Prawn $14, Pork $14 OR Vegan $12”, so the vegan spring rolls are $12. The same PDF carries a legend reading “VG = Vegan” and names a Vegan Burger (panko eggplant, lettuce, tomato, vegan aioli) marked VG; its price sits in a separate column we could not tie to the line, so we print none. The site footer reads Copyright 2021 and the PDF is undated, so treat the menu as a lead to confirm, not a current one.

Menu markers: the word “Vegan” on the spring roll price line, and VG in the menu’s dietaries legend.

Kitchen statement: none on the pages we read.

The marked order: the vegan spring rolls, $12, once the venue confirms the menu is current.

Ask: whether the PDF menu is current, and what the vegan burger costs now.

Quick answers

Is there a fully vegan restaurant in Kew?

Not among the places we could verify. None of the five calls itself fully plant-based on the pages we read; each describes vegan options on a wider menu. Skinny Dog Hotel and Kuche are in Kew and Kew East, and the other three are in Hawthorn.

Which of these venues mark a dish as vegan?

Skinny Dog Hotel prints VEGAN CHOC MUD CAKE at $19 on its Spring Food 2026 menu PDF, and the Auburn Hotel prints PLANT BASED BURGER at $31. Nevermind Bar’s menu PDF prices its Quinnie’s golden spring rolls at “Prawn $14, Pork $14 OR Vegan $12” and marks a Vegan Burger VG, with no price we could tie to it.

Does Kuche cater for vegan diets?

Its own page says “We cater to many dietary requirements: gluten free, vegan & vegetarian, dairy free, nut free and low FODMAP.” Its menu is published as images, so we have no dishes or prices to report.

How much is the plant-based burger at the Auburn Hotel?

$31 on its Spring Food 2026 menu PDF, at 85 Auburn Road, Hawthorn. Menus move, so check the current one.

Do these venues publish a vegan kitchen statement?

Not on the pages we read. None says whether it uses a dedicated fryer or how it avoids cross-contamination, so ask first, especially if you are also avoiding gluten or an allergen.

How we checked

On 2 and 3 October 2026 we read each venue’s own site, FAQ page or food menu PDF and copied the vegan wording exactly as printed. Skinny Dog’s and the Auburn’s menus are PDFs headed Spring Food 2026 with prices printed as bare numbers, so the $19, $29, $31 and $33 above are the numbers beside the dish names. Addresses were confirmed at a second source: OpenStreetMap, plus Broadsheet for the Auburn. The Auburn’s own site writes its suburb as Hawthorn East; the postcode 3122 is the one Australia Post lists under Hawthorn, so we print Hawthorn. We report markers and statements as the venues publish them. We do not judge whether any dish suits an allergy or a coeliac diet; only the venue can say that, so ask first. Opening hours are given only where one source states them clearly. The photos are illustrative, from Unsplash: they show the kind of dish, not these venues’ food.
