Everyone knows High Street and Kew Junction. Here are the Kew spots that do not make the Google results but locals would genuinely miss if they disappeared.
Studley Park Boathouse — Boathouse Road
Most people know the boathouse exists, but surprisingly few Melburnians have actually been. The cafe serves decent food with a view of the Yarra that makes you forget you are 7km from the CBD. The real move is hiring a rowboat ($35/hour) on a weekday morning when the river is empty and the light through the gum trees is genuinely beautiful. The boathouse has been operating in some form since 1863, making it one of Melbourne’s oldest continuous hospitality venues.
The Yarra Boulevard Loop
The sealed walking and cycling path along Yarra Boulevard from Studley Park through to Fairfield is one of Melbourne’s best urban trails, and it is drastically underused compared to the Merri Creek or Capital City paths. The canopy is dense, the river views are intermittent and rewarding, and on a weekday you can walk for 20 minutes without seeing another person. Access from Studley Park Road or through Yarra Bend Park.
Denmark Street’s Quiet Stretch
Denmark Street between Cotham Road and High Street is architecturally one of the best residential streets in Melbourne’s east. Federation homes, established gardens, and a canopy of elms that turns the street into a tunnel of green in summer. No shops, no traffic — just walking and looking. Worth a deliberate detour.
The Flying Fox Colony at Yarra Bend
Yarra Bend Park hosts one of Melbourne’s largest grey-headed flying fox colonies. The viewing platform near Bellbird Picnic Area lets you watch thousands of bats roosting during the day and taking flight at dusk. It is free, it is otherworldly, and most people who live in Kew have never been.
Raheen — 82 Studley Park Road
You cannot go inside, but the Italianate mansion at 82 Studley Park Road is one of Melbourne’s grandest private residences. Built in 1884, it has been home to archbishops and media barons. The exterior and gardens are visible from the street and worth seeing for context on Kew’s history as Melbourne’s establishment suburb.
