5 Days in Melbourne: How to Go Deeper Without Getting Lost

Five days in Melbourne is the right length to add a second regional day trip or a sport-and-stadium day to the standard 4-day itinerary. The fifth day is the relief day — the one where you slow down, deep-dive a single suburb, or take a second regional anchor that the 4-day visitors miss.

This is the longer-trip version of the 4-day Melbourne itinerary.

Days 1-4: As Per the 4-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — CBD walking and laneways (Federation Square, Hosier Lane, Queen Vic Market, State Library, NGV-or-museum afternoon, inner-north evening).

Day 2 — Inner-north walking (Brunswick Street, Smith Street, Sydney Road), live music or comedy evening.

Day 3 — Yarra Valley wine day (coach or self-drive, 3 wineries plus lunch).

Day 4 — MCG and AFL/cricket match (in season) OR St Kilda bayside arts day.

That’s the foundation. Day 5 adds depth.

Day 5 Option A: Phillip Island Penguin Parade

For families or first-time international visitors who didn’t do Phillip Island as a regional day:

Coach pickup: 11:00am from Federation Square. Cost $99-130.

Stops: Cape Schanck Lighthouse, Koala Conservation Centre, Penguin Parade Visitor Centre, parade itself at sunset.

Return to Melbourne: Around 11pm.

This is the right Day 5 if you’ve done Yarra Valley on Day 3 and want a wildlife-focused regional day.

Day 5 Option B: Mornington Peninsula

For wine, beach, and hot springs lovers:

Self-drive or organised tour: Mornington Peninsula is 60-90 minutes south of Melbourne. Coach tours from Federation Square $130-180.

Stops: Sorrento (heritage village), Portsea, Cape Schanck (lighthouse and ocean view), the Peninsula Hot Springs (Springs Lane, Fingal; $35-49 entry), and 2-3 wineries (Ten Minutes by Tractor, Pt. Leo Estate, Yabby Lake).

Return to Melbourne: 6-7pm.

This is the right Day 5 if you want a more-relaxed alternative to Yarra Valley with hot springs spa included.

Day 5 Option C: Dandenong Ranges

The under-the-radar alternative:

Self-drive or train (Belgrave line): 35 minutes east. Train to Belgrave then connect to Puffing Billy.

Stops: Puffing Billy heritage steam railway (1900s narrow-gauge), Sherbrooke Forest mountain ash walk, Sassafras and Olinda heritage tea rooms, the Dandenong Ranges National Park.

Return to Melbourne: 6-7pm.

This is the right Day 5 for visitors who want a forest-and-rainforest experience and are tired of wineries.

Day 5 Option D: A Deep-Inner-Suburb Day

For visitors who want to slow the pace:

Morning: A single inner suburb in detail — Brunswick (Sydney Road plus Lygon Street) or Footscray (Hopkins Street and Footscray Market) or Northcote (High Street tram corridor) or Carlton (Lygon Street and Carlton Gardens).

Lunch: A long sit-down lunch at a destination restaurant — Pellegrini’s (Carlton, since 1954), Stalactites (CBD Greek), or the South Melbourne Market dim sim institutions.

Afternoon: A second inner suburb on the same tram line, or a return to the CBD for a Federation Square afternoon programme.

Evening: One genuinely-good dinner at a bookings-required restaurant — Cumulus, Marion, France-Soir.

This is the right Day 5 for visitors who don’t want to rush.

Day 5 Option E: Sport-Adjacent Add-On

For sport fans:

Morning: MCG tour ($28; 90 minutes) plus the National Sports Museum (allow another 60 minutes).

Lunch: Cricketers’ Bar or one of the East Melbourne cafés.

Afternoon: Australian Sports Museum or the Carlton Football Club museum (depending on AFL season).

Evening: AFL pre-game pub at the Corner Hotel (Richmond, near the MCG); match ticket and full game.

This is the right Day 5 if you didn’t get to a match on Day 4 and the season permits.

What 5 Days Adds Over 4

The fifth day adds:

  • A second regional anchor so you’re not choosing between Yarra Valley and Phillip Island
  • Headroom for weather — if Day 1 rains out, you’ve got 4 more days rather than 3
  • A dedicated sport-day without compromising the city days
  • A relief day — the slowest day, the deep-dive day

For most international visitors, 5 days is meaningfully better than 4. The extra day is genuine headroom rather than padding.

What 5 Days Still Doesn’t Cover

Even five days struggles to fit:

  • Both major regional anchors (Great Ocean Road, Phillip Island, Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Macedon Ranges) — that’s 4 separate days
  • A multi-day Tasmania extension — Tasmania needs 4-5 days minimum
  • The Grampians or Wilsons Promontory — 2 days each minimum
  • Extended inner-suburb walking — Brunswick alone has multiple full-day options
