Remote work starts with the practical questions: is there wifi, when does it open, and is there somewhere to sit. This guide lines up five cafes in and around Northcote where the Australian Good Food Guide tags Free Wifi, and adds the opening hours each one publishes.
Two cafes are in Northcote, one is in Thornbury and two are in Fairfield. If you want a non-cafe backup, Northcote Library is listed with free wifi too.

Espresso Room’s site lists its hours as ‘Mon-Fri: 6:00AM-3:00PM Sat: 7:00AM-3:00PM Sun: 7:30AM-3:00PM’. The site also says it is ‘open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and everything in between’. AGFG tags it Free Wifi and Alfresco Dining. We could not find a published laptop policy.

Best for: An early start any day of the week, since the AGFG listing shows the same morning opening daily.
Harvest Foodstore & Cafe — 108 Station Street, Fairfield VIC 3078
Harvest Foodstore & Cafe’s site lists Mon to Fri as 7:30am - 6pm, Sat as 8am - 5pm and Sun as 8am - 4pm. It adds that the kitchen closes at 3pm each day, with drinks, sweets and cabinet items available until 4pm. The site says ‘many of our menu items being vegan, sugar free or dairy free’. AGFG tags it Free Wifi.
Desk price: None published that we could find; the site does say the kitchen closes before the cafe does, so plan lunch early.
Fairfield Park Boathouse — Fairfield Park Drive, Fairfield VIC 3078
Fairfield Park Boathouse’s site lists trading hours as ‘Monday - Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm Saturday - Sunday 8:30am - 6:00pm’. It describes ‘all the breakfast and lunchtime classics’ and a tea room with ‘freshly baked scones’. AGFG tags it Free Wifi, Water Views and Alfresco Dining. We could not find a published laptop policy.
Best for: A weekend session, since the site lists the longest weekend hours of the five.
