Correction (9 October 2026): an earlier version of this page listed places and details we could not stand behind. It has been rewritten from scratch: every place below was confirmed at two independent sources on 5 October 2026.
Sweet tooth, no savoury detour. This page answers one question: where in Northcote do you go when dessert is the whole plan? Six places made the cut. Three are in Northcote, two are over in Fairfield and one is in Thornbury.
The angle is gelato, brownies, cakes and pastry. Bakeries and cafes that lead with bread and coffee sit on other pages. Here every entry is a sweet-only stop.
Each place was checked against two independent sources. What you read below comes from the venue’s own site, the Northcote Rise directory or the Australian Good Food Guide, and each fact says which. Menu prices were left out, since we copied none.
The quick picks
| If you’re after | Head to | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Artisan gelato on High Street | Biancolatte | 331 High Street, Northcote |
| Pastry and desserts, sold-out style | Holy Sugar | 236 High Street, Northcote |
| Gluten-free choux and toasties | Butter Mafia | Unit 25, 148 Arthurton Road, Northcote |
| Hand-made gelato, vegan flavours | Gelato Papa Fairfield | 72A Station Street, Fairfield |
| Chocolate brownies, open daily | Brazen Brownies and Dessert Bar | 141A Station Street, Fairfield |
| Celebration cakes to pick up | Mali Bakes | 627 High Street, Thornbury |
Biancolatte — 331 High Street, Northcote VIC 3070
Gelato is the whole pitch here. Biancolatte’s site describes its product as “fresh, artisan gelato”. Simple. The shop on High Street is one of three in the brand, and the Northcote block is the one we checked.
Its site lists the shop as closed on Mondays and opening in the afternoon from Tuesday. Check the current times before you walk over.
The build: one scoop shop, one promise, and the venue’s own words are “fresh, artisan gelato”.
Holy Sugar — 236 High Street, Northcote VIC 3070
Pastry and desserts, and a short week. The Northcote Rise trader directory lists Holy Sugar at 236 High Street, and its listing says open Thursday to Sunday from 9am until sold out. Sold out means sold out.
The shop’s own site is an order page, so we could not read a menu there. We will not guess what is in the cabinet.
Order: go early on a Thursday to Sunday, because the directory says it runs until sold out.
Butter Mafia — Unit 25, 148 Arthurton Road, Northcote VIC 3070
Gluten-free is the whole pitch. Butter Mafia’s site says walk-ins are welcome for takeaway only. It also says Gluten Free Toasties, Choux Pastries and complimentary filter coffee are only available in Northcote on Saturdays.
That is a clear rule. Want the choux? Saturday. The shop sits in a unit on Arthurton Road, and its site lists Tuesday to Friday plus Saturday trading.
Order: pick Saturday for choux and toasties, and plan to take it away.
Gelato Papa Fairfield — 72A Station Street, Fairfield VIC 3078
Gelato Papa calls its product “Our hand-made Italian gelato”. The Fairfield shop is on Station Street, and the brand also has a Preston shop, so make sure you pick the right one.
Its site says “We have a good selection of vegan flavours in our cabinet that change from season to season.” It also says “Our kitchen is accredited by Coeliac Australia”. Closed Mondays, per its hours.
Mess forecast: a cabinet of changing vegan flavours means the line-up you see may not match last season’s.
Brazen Brownies and Dessert Bar — 141A Station Street, Fairfield VIC 3078
Brownies, plain and loud. The brand’s site lists “Chocolate brownies” and flags “GLUTEN FREE AVAILABLE”. The bar is on Station Street in Fairfield.
AGFG lists it open every day of the week, with later finishes on Friday and Saturday. Hours come from that listing, not the brownie site, which is an online shop.
The build: chocolate brownies as the base, with a gluten-free option the site flags in capitals.
Mali Bakes — 627 High Street, Thornbury VIC 3071
Cakes, and a studio rather than a walk-in counter. Mali Bakes lists “Celebration Cakes” on its site. Orders are placed online, and its FAQ describes the store on High Street in Thornbury as the pick-up point.
Its site lists store hours for Thursday and Friday, plus Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm. Order ahead, then collect.
Order: book the celebration cake online first, then collect it from the High Street store.

Which dessert places near Northcote are open on Mondays?
Only one of the six lists Monday trading. AGFG lists Brazen Brownies and Dessert Bar as open every day, Monday included. Biancolatte and Gelato Papa both list Monday as closed on their own sites. For Holy Sugar the Northcote Rise directory lists Thursday to Sunday, and Butter Mafia and Mali Bakes list other days on their sites.
Where can I order a celebration cake near Northcote?

How we checked
We checked every place on this page against at least two independent sources on 5 October 2026: OpenStreetMap, the places’ own websites, northcoterise.com.au and the Australian Good Food Guide. We copied no menu prices from these places’ own pages, so this page prints none. Menus, prices and opening hours change, so check with the venue before you go. The cover photo is illustrative, from Unsplash, and does not show any place on this page.
