Northcote’s transport game is one of the suburb’s biggest selling points. About 6km from the CBD in the City of Darebin (postcode 3070), it’s one of the best-connected inner north suburbs in Melbourne — two train stations, a tram line, excellent cycling infrastructure, and a walkable High Street strip that means most daily errands don’t require transport at all.
Transport Scorecard
| Mode | Available | Quality | Notes |

Getting to the CBD
By train: Northcote station and Merri station are both on the Hurstbridge/Mernda line. Flinders Street station in 15-20 minutes. Services run every 5-10 minutes during peak, every 10-20 minutes off-peak. This is genuinely one of the fastest commutes from the inner north.
By tram: Route 86 runs the full length of High Street from the CBD through Northcote and into Thornbury/Bundoora. CBD in 25-40 minutes depending on traffic and the tram’s general willingness to cooperate. Every Northcote local has a story about being late because of the 86.
By bike: Under 10km to the CBD via the Merri Creek Trail connecting to the Capital City Trail. Flat terrain, mostly separated bike paths. Realistic commute time: 25-35 minutes. Bike parking is decent at both stations.

- St Georges Road — Dedicated bike lanes connecting south to Fitzroy and north to Preston
- Clarke Street and Separation Street — Local bike routes through the residential areas
- High Street — Has bike lanes but can feel exposed during peak traffic. More confident riders only.

Driving and Parking
Driving in Northcote is fine until it isn’t. High Street traffic is congested during peak hours, and parking near Northcote Plaza on a Saturday is its own challenge.
Street parking: Most residential streets require City of Darebin parking permits. High Street has metered parking during business hours. Side streets off St Georges Road and Separation Street are your best bet for free parking, but check signs carefully — Northcote parking inspectors are efficient.
Proximity advantages: The Eastern Freeway on-ramp via Hoddle Street is accessible from the southern end. CityLink via Bell Street from the northern end.
Night Transport
- 86 tram: Night Network runs until about 1:30am on Friday and Saturday nights
- Hurstbridge/Mernda line: Last trains around midnight on weekends (check PTV for exact times)
- Rideshare: High Street near the Northcote Social Club (301 High Street) is the most reliable Uber pickup zone. Avoid ordering from quiet side streets — drivers will cancel if they can’t find you.
