Things to Do in South Yarra 2026

What to do in South Yarra this week and beyond. From the Royal Botanic Gardens to Chapel Street shopping, Fawkner Park sport, and Sunday pub sessions.

Things to Do in South Yarra 2026

South Yarra packs more into its few square kilometres than most Melbourne suburbs manage across twice the area. Between Chapel Street’s retail strip, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Fawkner Park, and enough restaurants to eat somewhere different every night for a month, the issue isn’t finding something to do — it’s choosing.

Outdoor Activities

Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne

Access: Anderson Street gate or Birdwood Avenue Hours: 7:30am-7:30pm (varies seasonally) | Free entry

Thirty-eight hectares of gardens, lakes, lawns, and winding paths on South Yarra’s northwestern edge. The Ornamental Lake loop is about 2km — flat, shaded, and busy enough to feel safe without feeling crowded. The Fern Gully feels like the Dandenongs. The Ian Potter Foundation Children’s Garden has water play and a kitchen garden on weekends.

Fawkner Park

Location: Between Commercial Road and Toorak Road

South Yarra’s proper neighbourhood park. Sports ovals, running paths, mature trees, and off-leash dog areas. Cricket in summer, footy in winter, and year-round fitness groups. The Saturday morning dog parade is an unofficial community event.

The Yarra River Trail

The shared path runs along the northern edge of the suburb and connects to the Capital City Trail — flat, scenic, and separated from traffic all the way to the CBD. Joggers, cyclists, dog walkers, and weekend strollers share the path. Access from the Chapel Street bridge or Anderson Street.

The Tan Track

The 3.8km running loop around the Botanic Gardens. Free, gorgeous, and full of people who take their Saturday morning jog seriously. Join the clockwise flow and enjoy some of Melbourne’s best parkland views.

Shopping and Browsing

Chapel Street — Toorak Road to Commercial Road

The South Yarra section of Chapel Street mixes designer boutiques (Scanlan Theodore, Marais) with independent stores, vinyl shops (Ghanda Music at 210 Chapel), and enough hair salons to style the entire suburb simultaneously. The fast fashion flagships have quieted down. What’s replaced them is more interesting.

Toorak Road Strip

More neighbourhood-feeling than Chapel Street. Independent wine shops, one-off boutiques, and cafes where tables are small and regulars have been coming for years. Saturday morning with a takeaway flat white and a browse is the standard move.

Prahran Market

Address: 163 Commercial Road (technically Prahran, five-minute walk from South Yarra station) Hours: Tue, Thu, Sat from 7am

The seafood counter alone justifies the walk. Deli counters, fresh produce, butchers who can talk you through a cut, and cafe stalls inside if you need second breakfast. Saturday morning is prime time.

Culture and Events

Como House and Gardens — Heritage-listed mansion on the corner of Williams Road and Lechlade Avenue. Free to walk the grounds, ticketed tours of the house, and regular community events. The gardens are excellent for a quiet wander.

Jam Factory Cinema — 289 Chapel Street. Reclining seats, proper legroom, and you’re on Chapel Street with dozens of options after the film. Standard tickets $21-25.

Chapel Street Precinct events — The precinct runs seasonal markets, live music events, and activations through the year. Check chapelstreet.com.au for what’s on.

Free Things to Do

  1. Walk the Royal Botanic Gardens — best in autumn when the colours turn
  2. Run the Tan Track — 3.8km loop, no entry fee
  3. Browse Chapel Street’s independent stores — window shopping costs nothing
  4. Walk the Yarra River trail east toward Richmond or west toward the CBD
  5. People-watch from a bench on Toorak Road or Domain Road
  6. Explore Como House gardens — free entry to the grounds
  7. Visit the Stonnington Library on Toorak Road — free WiFi, community hub

Rainy Day Options

  • Jam Factory Cinema — a wet weather standby with a chandelier in the foyer
  • Cafe crawl — pick three cafes, spend an hour at each, bring a book
  • Prahran Market — covered, warm, and you’ll leave with better groceries than you planned
  • Chapel Street shopping — the indoor boutiques and the Chapel Street Arcade keep you dry

The Verdict

South Yarra’s strongest assets are its parks and food scene. The Royal Botanic Gardens are genuinely outstanding and free. Fawkner Park is the neighbourhood park most suburbs wish they had. And the dining options along Chapel Street, Toorak Road, and the side streets mean you’ll never run out of new places to try.
