Correction (9 October 2026): an earlier version of this page listed places and details we could not stand behind. It has been rewritten from scratch: every place below was confirmed at two independent sources on 9 October 2026.

Free first, always. This page answers what you can do around St Kilda without paying to get in, and it covers five places: four in St Kilda and one in St Kilda East.

Four of the five carry a free tag from their own sources: the penguin viewing sessions, entry to Linden New Art, the St Kilda Festival and the outdoor fitness stations at Alma Park. The pier page we read does not give a charge or a free tag, so we do not call it free.

Each place was checked against two independent sources, including Parks Victoria, the City of Port Phillip and the places’ own sites. Bookings and dates change, so confirm on the official page before you head out.

Little Penguin viewing at St Kilda Pier — St Kilda Pier (viewing platform at the end of the pier), St Kilda VIC 3182

Parks Victoria says the sessions are free, but bookings are required. It describes nightly free, ticketed sessions from a viewing platform at the end of the pier, with two Penguin Viewing Experience sessions each night. To help protect the penguins, Parks Victoria says each session is limited to 150 people, so a spot is not guaranteed on the day. Session times are not printed on the Parks Victoria page we read, so use the official booking site.

Plan it: Book first through the official booking site, then confirm your session time there rather than guessing.

Linden New Art — 26 Acland Street, St Kilda VIC 3182

Linden New Art sits at 26 Acland Street. Its site lists it as open Tuesday to Sunday, 11AM to 4PM, with free entry and closed on public holidays. The site also says Linden provides free guided tours of each exhibition for groups of any size. Group tours need notice, so ask the gallery well ahead.

Rain backup: This is the indoor plan on the list, a gallery whose own site lists free entry.

St Kilda Festival — St Kilda foreshore, St Kilda VIC 3182

The festival site calls it a beloved, free celebration of summer and local music. It also says St Kilda Festival is one of Australia’s oldest music festivals. This is an annual event, not a place that trades daily, so it only counts as a plan when it is on.

Free first: The festival site says it is returning 20 - 21 February 2027, so put those dates in the diary and check the site for updates.

St Kilda Pier and Breakwater — St Kilda Pier, St Kilda VIC 3182

Parks Victoria describes the pier and breakwater as a popular destination for a stroll and fishing, with panoramic views of the Melbourne skyline and Port Phillip. The Kiosk, also known as Parer’s Pavilion, is at the centre of the pier and Parks Victoria says it offers food and beverages 7 days a week. The same page says jumping and diving off the pier are prohibited. We found no entry charge or free tag on the pages we read.

Time needed: No set duration is published, so allow time for a stroll out and back and a stop at the kiosk if you want one.

Alma Park — 150 Dandenong Road, St Kilda East VIC 3183

Alma Park is at 150 Dandenong Road in St Kilda East, just outside St Kilda proper. Council says outdoor fitness stations provide free exercise equipment for all members of the community to use at any time. It also lists BBQs, picnic tables including longer tables for group gatherings, and a play space with a magnificent tree house with climbing nets and a flying fox; check council’s page for any play equipment closed for works before you go.

Get there: Council gives the address as 150 Dandenong Road, St Kilda East, and says the park is bordered by Alma Road, Westbury Street and Dandenong Road.

Quick answers

What free things can you do in St Kilda?

Four of the five places here have a free tag from their own sources: the penguin viewing sessions (booking required), Linden New Art, the St Kilda Festival and the outdoor fitness stations at Alma Park. The pier is also on the list for a stroll, but the page we read does not say whether it is free.

Is the St Kilda Festival free?

The festival site calls it a beloved, free celebration of summer and local music. The same site says it is returning 20 - 21 February 2027, so check the festival site closer to the date.

Do you need to book to see the penguins at St Kilda?

Yes. Parks Victoria says the penguin sessions are free, but bookings are required. It says each of the penguin sessions is limited to 150 people, and session times are not printed on its page, so use the official booking site.

What is a free indoor thing to do in St Kilda when it rains?

Linden New Art is the indoor option on this page. Its own site lists free entry, Tuesday to Sunday, and says it is closed on public holidays, so check its visit page before you go.

How we checked

We checked every place on this page against at least two independent sources on 9 October 2026: OpenStreetMap, government pages, council pages and the places’ own websites. Facilities and opening hours change, so check the official page before you go. The cover photo is from Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 3.0), and it does not show any place on this page.
