Correction (1 October 2026): an earlier version of this page described five Italian restaurants in Windsor, with opening hours, seat counts, prices and “insider tips”, and was written as if we had eaten at each one. We had not, and we could not trace any of those five places to a website, a menu or a listing. The page has been rewritten from scratch: every place below was checked against its own current website or menu, and every price was copied from the venue’s own menu on 1 October 2026.
The Italian eating in this guide sits on two streets. Three of the places below are on Chapel Street, between number 78 and number 168, and one is on High Street, across the road from the Victoria Gardens dog park. Between them they cover the whole evening: a neighbourhood pizzeria, a pasta-and-amaro restaurant, a stone-fired pizza bar, and gelato for the walk home. The fifth pick, Osteria Renata, is on the same High Street under a Prahran address (Windsor and Prahran share the 3181 postcode), and it is here for a sit-down pasta night: its regular menu lists five pastas, every one priced.
Every pizza menu makes a claim, even when it says nothing: the style is in the description, the oven or the dough is in the boast, and the price is in the corner. This guide quotes those claims exactly as each venue makes them, names the dish that best shows what the kitchen is about, and gives its listed price. Menus move, so give them a squiz before you go.

Freddy’s Pizza — 78 Chapel St, Windsor VIC 3181

Freddy’s calls itself “your friendly neighbourhood pizzeria” and opens seven days: from 5pm Monday to Thursday and from noon Friday to Sunday. Broadsheet reports that the dough is left to ferment for up to 72 hours (a long, slow ferment builds flavour and gives a lighter, more open crust), and the pizzas carry names rather than numbers: “What’s the story Salvatore?” is San Marzano tomato, prosciutto, mascarpone, rucola and parmigiano for $32. The pasta list includes pappardelle in a lamb ragu in bianco (a white ragu, braised without tomato) at $34 and house-made gnocchi with wagyu beef ragu at $32, and dessert runs to Freddy’s tiramisu at $15 or cannoli siciliani, crisp fried pastry tubes filled with sweet ricotta, at $4 each.
The style: a pizzeria-trattoria; the menu lists San Marzano tomato and fior di latte on most pizzas, plus a gluten-free base.
The classic: “What’s the story Salvatore?”, $32. Note the menu’s weekend surcharge of 10%.
Verdict for: a weeknight pizza and pasta table with friends.
Studio Amaro — 168 Chapel St, Windsor VIC 3181
Illustrative photo. Photo by Max Griss on Unsplash
A Commune Group restaurant that bills itself as Italian food, drinks and DJs from day to night, with amaro, the bittersweet herbal liqueur Italians drink after dinner, poured throughout the venue; Broadsheet counts 40 to 50 bottles of it. The a la carte menu on its site on 1 October 2026 reads like a modern trattoria: rigatoni arrabbiata (the “angry” tomato and chilli sauce) with wood-fired chilli, stracciatella and olive crumb is $37, and campanelli, frilled bell-shaped pasta, with slow-braised lamb shoulder ragu is $39. Start with the sourdough focaccia at $12 and finish with an affogato, espresso poured over fior di latte gelato, at $10, or $16 with liqueur added. If you would rather not choose, the classic set menu is $72 a head.
Menu tells: “wood-fired” appears against the chilli on the rigatoni; no claims about the pasta dough are made.
The classic: rigatoni arrabbiata, $37. The menu notes a 10% weekend surcharge and no American Express.
Verdict for: date night, or a group dinner that runs late.
Small Print Pizza Bar — 388 High St, Windsor VIC 3181

Small Print describes its pizza as “a love affair with the neapolitan style of pizza making, but different”, with vegan alternatives and what it cheerfully calls “inauthentic flavours”. Every pizza is 12 inches, and the potato pizza (a white base with potato, red onion, rosemary, goats cheese and mozzarella, no tomato) is $27; the prosciutto, with pear, mozzarella, gorgonzola and rocket, is $29, and a gluten-free base is $6 extra. The menu says plainly that the kitchen is not a gluten-free or allergen-free environment, which is worth knowing before you order for a coeliac.
Menu tells: “Our dough is slow (48 hours), hand stretched and stone-fired.”
BYO / takeaway: pickup ordering is online, and the venue offers free delivery to the Victoria Gardens dog park across the road. BYO is not stated.
Verdict for: a pizza on a picnic rug with the dog, from 2pm on weekends.
Pidapipo Windsor — 85 Chapel St, Windsor VIC 3181
Illustrative photo. Photo by Haberdoedas on Unsplash
The Windsor shop of Pidapipo, whose flavours are all made at its Fitzroy Laboratorio, opens daily from noon until 10pm Sunday to Thursday and until 11pm on Friday and Saturday. On 1 October the flavour list on its own site included passionfruit and strawberry sorbetto alongside signatures such as fior di latte and bacio (chocolate and hazelnut), and the shop offers unlimited complimentary tastings, which settles the which-flavour problem. For a dinner party, the gelato cakes are sold at every store: the Tiramisu’ alla Pidapipo, chocolate sponge soaked in coffee and sherry syrup under mascarpone gelato and cocoa, is $65 in the online shop and serves 6 to 8.
The style: Italian-style gelato, churned denser and served a little warmer than ice cream, so the flavour comes through.
The classic: a scoop of fior di latte, the plain milk gelato any gelateria is judged on. Scoop prices were not on its website, so check the board in store.
Verdict for: dessert after any of the four Windsor dinners above.
Osteria Renata — 436-438 High St, Prahran VIC 3181

Strictly Prahran, at 436-438 High Street, but it shares Windsor’s 3181 postcode, and its menu lists five pastas plus a pre-order lobster spaghetti. Pappardelle, the wide egg ribbon made for heavy sauces, comes with wild boar ragu and parmigiano reggiano for $43.50; radiatori, the ridged “radiator” shape that traps sauce, is $36.50 with a spicy vodka sauce, stracciatella and pecorino romano. Gnocco fritto, the puffed fried dough of Emilia-Romagna, is done “cacio e pepe” (cheese and pepper) for $12.50, tiramisu is $16.50, and gluten-free pasta can be substituted for $3.50.
The classic: pappardelle with wild boar ragu, $43.50.
Before you book: the menu lists a 1.2% card surcharge and a 10% surcharge on Sundays.
Verdict for: a special-occasion pasta dinner.

How we checked
On 1 October 2026 we read each venue’s own website and its own menu, and copied every item and price exactly as printed: Freddy’s from the dine-in menu PDF its website links (the file is labelled winter), Studio Amaro from its September 2026 a la carte PDF, Small Print from the PDF menu on its site, Pidapipo from its stores page and online shop, and Osteria Renata from the menu page of its website. We confirmed each address at a second, independent source: Broadsheet, Time Out or OpenStreetMap. Where two sources disagreed (Time Out lists Studio Amaro under Prahran; the restaurant and Broadsheet say Windsor) we used the venue’s own address. In-store prices can differ from printed and online menus, and Pidapipo’s cake price is its online-shop price. No ratings, review counts or delivery-app prices are used anywhere on this page. The photos are illustrative, from Unsplash: they show the kind of dish, not the venue’s own food.
